About ACT Health:

Canberra Health Services (CHS) delivers acute, sub-acute, primary, and community-based health services across the Australian Capital Territory (ACT) and surrounding regions. The Neonatal Department at The Canberra Hospital is looking for a Neonatal Registrar to join their team.


Position Overview:

  • Employment Type: Full-time, 12 months (with the possibility of extension)

  • Commencement: Either May or August 2025

The Neonatal Department offers Neonatal Registrar positions for one to two years. Neonatal trainees, as well as paediatric basic and advanced trainees, are encouraged to apply. Advanced trainees in emergency medicine, ICU, and anaesthetics with appropriate clinical experience are also welcome. This department provides neonatal care to the ACT and surrounding NSW regions.

About the Role:

As a Neonatal Registrar, you will work within a supportive and energetic environment and gain extensive experience in neonatal care across various levels. The Canberra Hospital has approximately 3,500 deliveries per year and is the principal referral center for high-risk pregnancies. The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Special Care Nursery (SCN) have around 700-800 admissions per year, with 300 requiring respiratory support.

Your responsibilities will include:

  1. Providing clinical management of neonatal patients under supervision.

  2. Participating in acute admissions, in-patient care, outpatient clinics, and clinical handover.

  3. Working as part of a multidisciplinary clinical team and cooperating with other departments.

  4. Participating in neonatal teaching programs and research activities.

  5. Supervising junior medical staff and medical students.

  6. Contributing to clinical audits and improvements to patient care quality.

  7. Ensuring the completion of accurate medical records and discharge summaries.


Qualifications and Requirements:

To be eligible for this position, you must meet the following criteria:

  • PGY 4+ at the commencement date of the role.

  • Registration with AHPRA (Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency) or eligibility for registration.

  • Working with Vulnerable People registration.

  • A commitment to continuing professional development and participation in relevant teaching programs.

  • Computer literacy is required for documentation and the use of the Digital Health Record system.

  • Availability for weekend and after-hours work is necessary.

Desired Skills:

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and lead where required.

  • Experience in research or audit with planned or previous projects.

  • Strong commitment to teaching at various levels.

  • Understanding and adherence to safety, quality standards, and workplace health and safety policies.
